I went to see Ira Glass talk about (perform?) “This American Life Live” this weekend at Royce Hall. The show was like a theatrical college lecture - just Ira at a desk with a sound board and tape playback . The show was filled with stories about the making of This American Life, and various insights on the art of storytelling. One thing I learned is that TAL uses the same structure as Jesus, and did not even know it: Action - Action - Action- Reflection. Stories should take you on a ride that you trust will take you to a destination. An audience will listen to even the most mundane stories if they are told well.
Ira wouldn’t allow the show to be recorded so in honor of the show, the link is a favorite This American Life episodes about Summer Camp.
Thanks to Ben for taking me!!!
